Washington-Rep. Lloyd Smucker (PA-11) released the following statement regarding the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's approval of the preliminary permit application of the proposed construction of the hydroelectric pumped storage facility at Cuffs Run proposed by York Energy Storage, LLC:
"I will do everything in my power to oppose the proposed construction of the hydroelectric pumped storage facility at Cuffs Run proposed by York Energy Storage, LLC, at every stage of this project's consideration.
This project, if allowed to proceed, would destroy preserved farms, a regional scenic trail, the viewshed of a popular multimodal rail trail, and forested lands needed to help protect the ecological health of this landscape and an already impaired waterway. More than $100 Million has been invested in this scenic area over the last decade to preserve our rich agricultural heritage and make the Susquehanna region a tourist and outdoor recreation hub. We cannot sacrifice that growth in the name of "clean energy."
Residents and elected officials across Lancaster and York counties have come together to oppose this reckless and destructive project. I thank the many members of our community, as well as the bipartisan group of public officials from both counties who stood united in opposing the project, for sharing their thoughts on the project. It will be critical for all of us to continue to make our voices heard as the process continues," said Rep. Lloyd Smucker (PA-11).
