Former January 6 Committee Chairman Thompson Releases Statement on Today’s Supreme Court Decision on January 6 Prosecutions

Washington, D.C. - Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), former Chairman of the Bipartisan Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, released the below statement on the U.S. Supreme Court decision, Fischer v. United States, pertaining to January 6 prosecutions:

"I am disappointed that today's overly technical opinion jeopardizes dozens of prosecutions for January 6th offenses. The conservative Court, in the words of Justice Barrett, forced itself to perform 'textual backflips to find some way-anyway-to narrow the reach' of a clearly written law which Congress passed. Those who sought to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power on January 6, 2021, still need to face the consequences of their deplorable acts. To be clear, this ruling will have an impact on only a small number of cases out of the over 1400 criminals who have been charged and sentenced for their violent actions on that terrible day - and, thankfully, the Justice Department should still be able to aggressively pursue those who would undermine American democracy."
