MEMA Report: ADAS Growth Leads to Safety Concerns

Las Vegas, N.V. -- MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers' Mobility Technology Council (MTC) published an industry white paper identifying challenges with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) calibrations and highlighting several recommendations to address them.

The MTC, in partnership with SEMA, produced the detailed ADAS paper recently and is leading discussions on its proposed solutions this week at AAPEX and the SEMA Show.

"The ADAS market is growing, but the MTC Work Group found that there are a lot of improper and missing calibrations due to misinformation and misunderstandings by repair facilities and vehicle owners," said Chris Gardner, MEMA Aftermarket Suppliers' Senior Vice President, Programs and Technology. "Our objective is for the ADAS white paper to generate conversations and launch cross-industry collaboration to resolve the potential safety impacts."

The ADAS calibration market will double this decade and top $50 billion by 2030. The calibration equipment market will more than triple to about $1 billion by 2033. This growth is creating complexity. Today's typical passenger vehicles contain 10 systems powered by five different technologies.

Any one of these events can create the need for recalibration:

  • Vehicle modifications

  • Minor or major accidents

  • Hitting guard rails or potholes

  • Speeding over speed humps

  • Improper tire pressure

This complexity creates safety concerns. Most repair facilities don't have the technology or training to calibrate ADAS, and each OEM has its own approach to ADAS calibration.

The white paper recommends creating industry-wide standards to help reduce confusion and ensure vehicles operate with properly functioning safety systems.

MEMA's MTC will continue researching and addressing ADAS challenges and updating the white paper in 2025. MEMA and SEMA are planning an ADAS Symposium, open to all industry stakeholders, for the second quarter to explore industry-wide solutions.
