Turkish parcel deliveries to surpass 476 million shipments this Peak season, FedEx study reveals

13 November 2024, Istanbul, Türkiye - A new study released today by Federal Express Corporation, the world's largest express transportation company, forecasts that parcel carriers will collectively distribute more than 476 million shipments across Türkiye between October and December 2024, 10.1% more than in the same period in 2023.

The independent study was conducted by Effigy Consulting, which analysed its courier, express and parcels (CEP) database with 500,000 data points on more than 300 carriers in 41 countries.

The data shows a significant increase on the 2023 figures for Turkey, up from 432m parcels to 476m in 2024. Türkiye is one of the fastest growing major markets and ranks in the top 5 European busiest markets for parcels this Peak season. The country is representing the 7.7% of the total deliveries made across Europe, and is behind only UK (1,29bn), Germany (1,1bn) and France (524m) but ahead of other major European markets like Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, and Belgium. This growth is being driven by a rise in e-commerce which accounts for nearly 70% of shipments going directly to consumers across the European market.

Across the whole of Europe, 6.2bn shipments will be made between October and December 2024, 9.0% more than in the same period in 2023. To illustrate the scale of the Peak, if laid end to end the parcels would stretch 1.15 million miles, enough to stretch to the moon and back twice, with plenty of parcels to spare. The total weight of goods transported across Europe this Peak will be almost 7.5m tonnes, which equates to around 15 kg for every person living in the EU and the UK. Europe is forecast to import more goods from outside the continent than it exports, with almost 200 million shipments coming in from for instance China and the USA compared to 75 million going out. However, almost half a billion of the parcels shipped this Peak season in Europe are expected to be exports, with European based businesses shipping nearly 500 million parcels to other countries both inside and outside the EU.

The peak season, encompassing Black Friday and the festive season, is a crucial period for European retailers and manufacturers. The surge in e-commerce primarily drives significant growth during this time. In Türkiye, a staggering 73.4% of shipments (349 m) during this period are expected to be business-to-consumer (B2C), reflecting the growing popularity of online shopping. Business-to-business (B2B) shipments also experience a significant surge as retailers restock their inventories and prepare for the holiday rush. Approximately 12% of all shipments are projected to be B2B. Daily deliveries on the Turkish Black Friday (29th November) will grow to 10.8 million this year up from 9.4 million in 2023.

"Peak season is a critical time for the logistics sector and the countless businesses that we support in Türkiye. Shipping across continents and countries is crucial to trade and growth especially this year that is expected to be the biggest since the pandemic for parcel deliveries, reflecting the strength of ecommerce. By leveraging our air and road network, we support our customers in navigating the busiest time of the year and helping them seize growth opportunities across regions." said Eser Sezek, Vice President Ground Operations for South-East Europe & France at FedEx. "As a strategic crossroads for global trade, Türkiye plays a pivotal role in connecting European businesses with markets across Asia, the Middle East. FedEx is here to support business in Turkiye to explore new markets, effectively meet customers' growing expectations, build a competitive advantage, and dynamically develop their business."
