'Creative Concord' Art & Music Jam Returns Oct. 5-6

Artists and art lovers from all over the Bay Area will gather in Concord's "living room" - Todos Santos Plaza - on October 5 and 6 for the city's third annual celebration of arts, culture, and community, known as Creative Concord.

The two-day "Art and Music Jam" will feature 16 artists painting 5' x' 6' original artworks on canvas in the park over a two-day period, as well as musical performances by nearly a dozen artists and bands. See the lineup.

On Oct. 1, six muralists will begin painting their installations throughout the downtown area. See the muralist lineup. The murals are scheduled to be completed by Oct. 6. These new murals will join the 12 others that were brought to life in 2022 and 2023. See them here.

"In Concord, we like to express our sense of shared community by combining art and cultural appreciation through our public art," said Concord Mayor Edi Birsan. "Our Creative Concord murals are a strong reflection of the city's vision to build a community in harmony with itself."

"As a Concord born and raised artist, I think the Creative Concord initiative is a pivotal and much needed program for the city," said Brian Arriaga, a 2024 Creative Concord muralist and 2022 Art and Music Jam artist. "It creates valuable opportunities for artists of all ages and skill levels, all the while beautifying and inspiring the entire community."

Creative Concord is made possible through a collaboration among the city, art-centric agency Local Edition Creative, and the tourism bureau Visit Concord.

"With a focus on highlighting diverse styles, cultures, and themes, Creative Concord has enlivened the city with a portfolio of artworks that embody a sense of welcoming and an understanding that a wonderfully diverse community can be found here," said Sage Loring, co-founder and creative director of Local Edition Creative.

The free, family-friendly event runs 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday and will feature other booths and activities, including a pinball tent, for people to visit.

All of the canvas art that is painted during this event will be available for sale, with proceeds going directly to the artists.

Among the murals, one has special significance for the City of Concord, which is currently celebrating the 50th anniversary of its sister city relationship with Kitakami, Japan.

Muralist JUURI will be painting a 35' x 12' mural at 2345 Willow Pass Road, and her vision is to "convey the power and dynamism of the Onikenbai dance." This mural is being sponsored by the nonprofit Concord Ambassadors, which will be hosting a delegation of visitors from Japan during the week of the installation. The Ambassadors say the mural is a celebration of the long-standing tie between the two cities that have a cultural exchange and bond of friendship.
