Local Assistance for 9/13 Chinatown Fire

Posted on 09/13/2024

At 3:43 am, Friday, September 13, a multi-story apartment building under construction on New Depot Street in Chinatown caught fire. LA City Fire responded to the major blaze, working several hours to extinguish it, though three nearby buildings were impacted and several dozen local residents and several pets were, at least temporarily, displaced -- with one building being red tagged as unsafe to inhabit.

LA City Recreation & Parks, working with the American Red Cross and other nonprofits, established a temporary shelter that night and provided aid, at the Alpine Recreation Center nearby.

Saturday morning, a Local Assistance Center opened to provide initial recovery services, from 10 am until at least 4 pm that day (see flyers).

A general informational meeting for those affected will be held at the same address at 3 pm, Saturday.
