Latest-Generation Olympus Endoscopy System Launches in Brazil

SÃO PAULO, Brazil, (September 3, 2024) - Olympus Latin America announced today the Brazilian launch of the EVIS X1™ endoscopy system1, Olympus' most advanced endoscopy system to-date.

Two events supporting the launch will feature virtual lectures by Dr. Yoji Takeuchi about colorectal cancer and the role Olympus technology can play in the detection and treatment of the disease and hands-on demonstrations of the EVIS X1™ system. The events will be held Sept. 4 in Rio de Janeiro and Curitiba and Sept. 19 in Brasilia.

Dr. Yoji Takeuchi, Department of Gastrointestinal Oncology, Osaka International Cancer Institute, will present the lecture "Prevention of Colorectal Cancer Development Using EVIS X1™." Dr. Takeuchi will examine colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence rates, the effect of colonoscopy on minimizing the risks of CRC and the correlation between adenoma detection rates and CRC deaths. He will also discuss the use in endoscopy of EVIS X1's visualization technologies: Texture and Color Enhancement Imaging (TXI™) technology, Red Dichromatic Imaging (RDI™) technology, Brightness Adjustment Imaging with Maintenance of Contrast (BAI-MAC™) technology and Narrow Band Imaging™ (NBI™) technology.

A study looking at CRC rates in Latin America found that the death rate from CRC grew by 20% in the region between 1990 and 2019, even as mortality rates declined by about 4.3% globally during the same period. While deaths from CRC are forecast to continue dropping in most countries through 2035, researchers do not project a similar decrease in Latin American and Caribbean countries.2

Dr. Gustavo Andrade de Paulo, a gastroenterologist with Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein and a member of the Brazilian Society of Digestive Endoscopy, was the first user of EVIS X1 in Brazil.

"Preventive screenings are so important in the battle against diseases like colorectal cancer, and physicians need the best technologies available to detect, diagnose and treat a variety of gastrointestinal disorders," said Dr. de Paulo. The EVIS X1™ endoscopy system includes two compatible gastrointestinal endoscopes: the GIF-1100 gastrointestinal videoscope indicated for use within the upper digestive tract and the CF-HQ1100DL/I colonovideoscope indicated for use within the lower digestive tract. The lightweight ErgoGrip control section of these endoscopes is ergonomically designed to provide a comfortable and stable grip and ease in reaching angulation control knobs and scope switches. Features of the EVIS X1 system's visualization technologies include:

  • Texture and Color Enhancement Imaging: TXI™ technology is designed to increase the visibility of lesions and polyps by enhancing image color and texture.4
  • Red Dichromatic Imaging: RDI™ technology is designed to enhance the visibility of deep blood vessels and bleeding points.2
  • Brightness Adjustment Imaging with Maintenance of Contrast: BAI-MAC™ technology is designed to correct the brightness levels in dark areas of the endoscopic image, while maintaining the brightness of lighter areas, to increase the total distance view.5
  • Narrow Band Imaging™: NBI™ technology enhances visual observation of mucosal and vascular patterns by utilizing specific blue and green wavelengths absorbed by hemoglobin.2

TXI™, RDI™, BAI-MAC™ and NBI™ technologies are not intended to replace histopathological sampling as a means of diagnosis. These are adjunctive tools for endoscopic examination that can be used to supplement Olympus white light imaging.
