Given the recent success of the movie "Wicked" and its exploration of the backstories of characters like the Wicked Witch of the West, Dr. Dennis Denenberg now gives us a canine perspective of the Oz mythology. Denenberg, professor emeritus at Millersville University offers a unique perspective on the beloved classic, "The Wizard of Oz," through the eyes of its canine companion, Toto.
Inspired by countless viewings of the timeless film, Denenberg realized the pivotal role Toto played in the narrative. "Everything happens because of something he does or is done to him," he explains. This realization sparked the idea to explore the magical land of Oz from a dog's point of view.
"By following the film's storyline, I've created a familiar journey for readers while infusing it with a fresh, canine perspective. Toto's memoir dives into the iconic lines and scenes that have captivated audiences for generations, offering a humorous and heartwarming take on the beloved tale," Denenberg explains.
Denenberg's meticulous analysis of the film helped him write the memoir. By pausing the movie whenever Toto appeared, he discovered a clever technique used to keep the dog engaged: his gaze was often directed "off-screen" towards his handler, likely holding a tempting treat. This behind-the-scenes insight adds an extra layer of charm to the narrative he says.
Denenberg hopes readers will gain a deeper appreciation for the often-overlooked role of animals in our lives. "Toto's memoir highlights the unconditional love and support that dogs provide, as well as their ability to bring joy and comfort," says Denenberg. "By examining the bond between Dorothy and Toto, I encourage the reader to reflect on the special relationships they share with their own furry companions."
To support the fight against breast cancer, Denenberg encourages readers to donate to Diana's Dreamers, a foundation dedicated to raising awareness and funding research. Inspired by his sister's courageous battle with the disease, he organizes annual events to educate young women about breast cancer prevention and early detection.
