Upcoming Lions Season Parking and Tailgating; Home Opener this Sunday

• Make reservations or pay ahead for lots and garages using the ParkDetroit app
• People Mover is closed for track replacement
• QLINE open until Midnight with Park and Ride Options
• Heavy traffic expected; use M-10 to avoid traffic getting downtown

The Detroit Lions season opener is this Sunday, September 8 at 8:20 p.m. With this event we are expecting Downtown to be busier than usual and are issuing some reminders and tips to maneuver through heavy traffic and street closures.

Heavy traffic is expected to begin around 2 p.m. ahead of kickoff at 8:20 p.m. We are expecting some backups at the I-75 Grand River exit and the I-375 Madison Ave exit. To avoid this, we encourage traffic to use M-10 to access downtown.

As a reminder for those coming downtown, People Mover is fully closed for track replacement until mid-November and will be inaccessible to the public on Sunday. QLINE on Woodward will be fully operational and open late on Sunday until Midnight.

The QLINE will be offering $5 Park and Rides from Lot 12 at Wayne State between Woodward and Harper (6050 Woodward Ave) by QLINE Amsterdam stop. Those coming downtown can also make reservations for many downtown lots and garages ahead of time using the ParkDetroit app.

Tailgaters should make reservations in advance with the lot they are planning to be in, so they can be sure they have their spot secured. Be mindful that many do not open until early afternoon. Some spots are already sold out, including Eastern Market tailgating spots. Eastern Market tailgating will open at 2 p.m. for those who have already reserved their place.

Tailgating and drinking are not permitted in the street.

On-street parking is allowed only in designated metered zones (although enforcement does not take place on Sundays), or on un-metered streets that may allow parking (bike lanes are not parking lanes). Vehicles parked on the street that block access to crosswalks, driveways, alleys, bus stops or fire hydrants may be ticketed and towed.

Visitors should park only in regulated, marked parking lots that post their rates. The city will have inspectors out make sure lots are not charging in excess of what is allowed by city ordinance. Visitors also should be wary of parking on vacant lots, whether or not someone is charging. Scammers have been known to wave people onto lots they do not own and charge for parking. In these cases, the legitimate owner legally may have vehicles towed.

Additional things happening this weekend for season opening:

The Lions are planning to host a drone show for Saturday, September 7 following the same format as the January 27 show.  The show is scheduled to start at 8:45 p.m. and should last roughly 20 minutes. All streets except Adams should reopen by 10 p.m.

• 1:00p    Adams between Brush & Witherell (tentatively reopens at midnight)
• 7:30p    Brush between Beacon and Montcalm
• 7:30p    Witherell between Montcalm and Adams
• 7:30p    John R between Adams and Madison
