Loudoun County Glass Recycling Program Expands to Ashburn; Ribbon Cutting Scheduled for September 10

Loudoun County's glass recycling program is expanding to include a new location at the One Loudoun Park and Ride, 20360 Savin Hill Drive in Ashburn. A ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the site is scheduled for 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 10, 2024.

"I am pleased to see Loudoun County's glass recycling program expand," said Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chair Phyllis J. Randall. Having these purple bins located throughout the county enables us to separate glass from other recyclable materials and lessens the amount of glass that is disposed of as waste. Increasing opportunities to recycle glass also helps Loudoun County meet our environmental goals."

"This new center provides a more convenient way for people in the Broad Run and Ashburn area to recycle glass now that they won't have to drive to sites located farther away. I am hopeful it will also encourage more people in the community to recycle their glass bottles and jars," said Broad Run District Supervisor Sylvia Glass, who proposed locating a glass recycling center in the 20147 ZIP code as part of a "Board Member Initiative" approved by the Board of Supervisors in 2022.

The other county-operated sites where glass bottles and jars are now being collected separately are:

  • Arcola Recycling Center, 24244 Stone Springs Boulevard, Arcola
  • Central Western Loudoun Recycling Center, 38159 Colonial Highway, Hamilton
  • Landfill Recycling Center, 21101 Evergreen Mills Road, Leesburg
  • Mickie Gordon Park Recycling Center, 23229 Carters Farm Lane, Middleburg
  • Philomont Recycling Center, 36560 Jeb Stuart Road, Philomont
  • Sterling Park Recycling Center, 400 W Laurel Avenue, Sterling (Note: This center is closing as of September 30, 2024.)

Glass Recycling Guidelines

Glass bottles and jars should be placed in the large purple bins labeled "Glass Recycling" and residents should follow these guidelines:

  • Only glass bottles and jars are accepted.
  • The glass bottles and jars must be empty and rinsed out.
  • No lids, caps or corks.
  • Deposit bottles and jars loosely in the recycling containers provided, not in bags.

Glass Recycling Program

The Loudoun County glass recycling program is designed to increase recycling opportunities for glass and decrease the amount of glass disposed of as waste. The commingling of glass with other recyclable materials at the point of collection requires additional processing that is not currently available at local facilities and results in disposal of the glass as waste or otherwise limits the extent to which the glass can be recycled.

The glass bottles and jars collected in the purple bins in Loudoun County are sent to other facilities that are able to recycle them into new glass products.

At the direction of the Board of Supervisors, the Department of General Services continues to explore the feasibility of expanding the program to include more glass-only recycling sites throughout the county.
