Mexico attends opening of 79th UN General Assembly general debate
  • Foreign Secretary Alicia Bárcena, representing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, attended the opening of the general debate and will address the General Assembly plenary on September 28, reaffirming Mexico's humanist, pacifist, feminist, and multilateral approach to the international community

Foreign Secretary Alicia Bárcena Ibarra attended the opening of the 79th United Nations (UN) General Assembly general debate.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the former Prime Minister of Cameroon, Philémon Yang, presided over the debate, whose theme is "Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development, and human dignity for present and future generations."

Foreign Secretary Bárcena will address the General Assembly plenary on Saturday, September 28, reaffirming the Mexican Government's humanist, pacifist, feminist, and multilateral approach to the international community.

She will emphasize the urgent need to tackle the most pressing global challenges: the spread of armed conflicts, food security, the world drug problem, migration, disarmament, transnational organized crime, small arms and light weapons trafficking, emerging health risks, and cybersecurity.

The General Assembly's general debate serves as a forum for peaceful dialogue on crucial issues such as peace, security, disarmament, and humanitarian matters, amplifying the voices of all peoples.

This international forum reflects the diversity and richness of global perspectives, allowing the 193 UN member states to present their positions on key international issues and outline their proposals and priorities.

The Mexican delegation accompanying Foreign Secretary Bárcena at the opening of the general debate included: Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs María Teresa Mercado Pérez, Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights Joel Hernández García, Mexico's Permanent Representative to the UN Héctor Vasconcelos y Cruz and Alternate Permanent Representative Alicia Buenrostro Massieu, and the Foreign Secretary's Chief of Staff, Martín Borrego Llorente.

Through it active participation in the UN General Assembly general debate, the Mexican Government reaffirms its commitment to multilateralism and international cooperation in addressing our global challenges.
