Precautionary Boil Order - Old Town North: West of Central Ave and south of Oak

The following information was relayed to registered households within the affected area via a Rave Alert notification at approximately 9 pm on Monday, July 1:

A precautionary boil order has been issued for the portions of the Old Town North subdivision west of Central Avenue and south of Oak Street, until 9:00 pm on July 2, 2024, due a water main break that has occurred near the intersection of Hampton Avenue and Hillgrove Avenue.

Why is a Boil Order Being Issued?

Boil orders can be issued for any number of reasons. The most common reason is that sustained pressure in a water main decreased to below 20 psi. However, a larger order may be issued if the Village's water system loses potential pressure and is unable to verify system pressures adjacent to the event. Due to the size of the break at Hillgrove Avenue and Hampton Avenue, the Village was unable to verify system pressure at various locations within the subdivision.

Precautionary boil orders are meant to inform residents that there has been an incident that caused the water system to become more susceptible to outside contaminants. Precautionary boil orders do NOT mean water has tested positive for contamination. It is NOT the same thing as a mandatory boil order. Instead, it is a precautionary measure meant to inform residents, their families, or their business customers. until proper testing can be completed.

What are my next steps as a resident?

While the boil order is in place residents should boil their water for five minutes and allow it to cool before drinking. Residents may continue to use water for non-potable uses such as bathing and washing without the need for boiling the water.

  • It is advised that residents do not use their ice machine or refrigerator filtered water during this time.
  • The water is safe to use for clothes and linens, dishwashing and bathing due to the use of additional cleaning agents.

On July 2, Water Division staff will take samples from the distribution system in Old Town North. When all samples are cleared the boil order will expire at the posted time of 9:00 PM.

The Village will not post an additional "All Clear" message. A message will only be posted if the boil order must be extended beyond 9:00 PM on July 2, 2024.
