Beatty Celebrates Ohio Wins on Two-Year Anniversary of CHIPS and Science Act

WASHINGTON, DC- Two years ago, Democrats enacted the historic CHIPS and Science Act to strengthen American manufacturing, secure our supply chains, and create good-paying jobs across the country. These Democratic investments are opening doors of opportunity across the country and lowering long-term costs. Communities across the nation, including Ohio's Third Congressional District, are seeing the benefits of these democratic investments in our communities that Republicans are attempting to claim credit for. In 2022, 187 Republicans-88% of the Republicans in office in 2022-voted against The Chips and Science Act.

Congresswoman Beatty voted for the CHIPS and Science Act, and helpedin the negotiation process to ensure Central Ohio institutions and communities would benefit from the funding. Beatty successfully added two amendments to the bill: 1) requiring the Department of Commerce to assign personnel with the responsibility of overseeing CHIPS Act obligations to economically disadvantaged individuals, minority-owned businesses, veteran-owned businesses, and women-owned businesses; 2) adding that CHIPS Act funds should be used to "promote [] the inclusion of economically disadvantaged individuals and small businesses."

Today, she celebrates its impact on Ohio and its future:

"In 2022, I authored a section in the CHIPS and Science Act to better serve communities that have historically been left outside of big investments. I hoped that the CHIPS legislation could turn around the decline of American manufacturing, lower prices for American-made goods, and create thousands of good-paying jobs in the process,"said Congresswoman Beatty."Two years later, I'm happy to see companies and communities engaged in creating a robust semiconductor ecosystem-reshaping the computer chip industry to fight scarcity, protect national security and create more American manufacturing jobs."

Companies have announced(link is external)$395+ billion in investments in semiconductors and electronics and the creation of over 115,000 jobs since President Biden signed The CHIPs and Science Act into law. Ohio is benefitting from these investments. Semiconductor maker Intel will use funds allocated from The CHIPS and Science Act that Congresswoman Beatty helped secure, alongside grants and loans to build semiconductor production facilities in Ohio. They plan to build two semiconductor factories just outside Columbus, including the largest AI chip factory in the world in Ohio, which will create over 10,000 jobs.

The CHIPS and Science Act's impact has extended to the environment, as the National Science Foundation awarded a $15 million regional innovation grant, authorized by the legislation, to a project that includes Ohio. This initiative focuses on developing smart water recovery systems that will conserve water and enhance the sustainability of manufacturing in the Great Lakes region.

By fostering innovation, creating jobs, and promoting sustainable practices, The CHIPS and Science Act has laid the foundation for a stronger, more resilient and more inclusive economy. With this anniversary Congresswoman Beatty celebrates these achievements, and reaffirms her commitment to ensuring that these investments continue to uplift all communities, particularly those that have been historically underserved.
