Written By Michael Leary

CLA requested a 45-day extension on the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) draft biological opinion (BiOp) on methomyl. The BiOp, based on EPA data, found methomyl likely to jeopardize 82 listed species and adversely modify 34 critical habitats. It also proposed suggests some potential reasonable prudent alternatives (RPAs) which are mitigation measures to prevent this jeopardy or adverse modification (J/AM). While focused on methomyl, the BiOp could set a precedent for other chemicals, as it involves evolving methods and data. FWS will finalize the BiOp after reviewing comments, with a current deadline of September 9.
