Penn Circle Two-Way Conversion Project Completed

Marking Over a Decade Worth of Work Aimed at Fighting Urban Renewal

Pittsburgh, PA - Today, Mayor Ed Gainey and other officials celebrated the completion of the Penn Circle Two-Way Conversion project. This project is a collaborative effort by the Urban Redevelopment Authority and the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure aimed at reconnecting the East Liberty neighborhood.

This conversion project, which is part of the city's efforts to fight urban renewal, began over a decade ago. It consists of several components such as 'flipping' the one-way traffic into two directions and adding 34 striped crosswalks, 6,492 square feet of additional green space, more than eight thousand feet of new protected bike lanes, more than three thousand linear feet of new directional travel lanes, and ten additional parking spots.

"Fighting back against urban renewal is more than just infrastructure-it's about righting the wrongs of the past and ensuring that every community, especially those that have been historically underserved, receives the investment and care they deserve," said Mayor Ed Gainey.

The Penn Circle Two Way Conversion is an integral part of Phase I of the East Liberty Transit Revitalization Investment District (ELTRIDRA) implementation plan. Furthermore, it punctuates the City of Pittsburgh's efforts to achieve zero traffic fatalities by implementing safety features for pedestrians, motorists, and cyclists alike.

This project was constructed by Frank J. Zottola Construction, Inc., Mackin Engineering and Michael Baker International Inc. with support from the Department of Mobility and Infrastructure.
