Alternate routes encouraged for travelers headed to Lake of the Ozarks…

Route 54 bridge work in Mid-MO Scheduled to begin

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Starting at 7 p.m. on July 15, a half-mile section of U.S. Route 54 in Jefferson City, south of the Missouri River, will narrow to one lane in each direction. This traffic shift for bridge rehabilitation work is expected to cause significant delays. Travelers needing to drive through to the Lake of the Ozarks region or other summertime destinations are encouraged to use an alternate route and avoid peak hours, if possible. The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph and the lanes will be narrowed to 10 feet wide.

Those who drive this section of U.S. Route 54 as part of their daily commute are advised to avoid peak hours and plan for extra travel time. This work is expected to continue through mid-October.

Those who are traveling to or from the Lake of the Ozarks region, or other destinations, are encouraged to use an alternate route, which will vary based on the specific starting point and destination. Example alternate routes:

  • North (Moberly, Macon): U.S. Route 63 south to I-70 west to either Missouri Route 5 or Missouri Route 87.
  • Northeast (Hannibal): U.S. Route 61 south to Missouri Route 47 to I-44 to Missouri Route 7.
  • East (St. Louis-region): I-44 to Route 7, or I-44 to U.S. Route 50 to Missouri Route 28 to Route 42.

If you'd like help finding an alternate route, you can consult MoDOT's Traveler Information Map at traveler.modot.org or call our 24/7 Customer Service line at 888 ASK MODOT (888-275-6636).
