AM Radio Bill Waiting for a Ride Home

posted on 8.19.2024

- Tight Congressional Calendar, Few Vehicles

After gaining overwhelming bipartisan support in both chambers of Congress and clearing key committee hurdles in just a year's time, the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act is now awaiting another critically important step before becoming law: a final vote by both chambers as part of legislation destined for President Joe Biden's signature.

It could be a while, but that doesn't mean Radio broadcasters should just sit and wait.

Single-issue legislation rarely advances on its own, instead it's typically rolled into a larger must-pass spending bill that's needed to keep key governmental operations running but usually doesn't move until just ahead of Christmas break.

In the meantime, Texas Radio broadcasters should take every opportunity to implore Texas members of Congress to make sure the bill clears the final hurdle. The time to start is now.

TAB is providing Texas Radio GMs and owners targeted reminders to keep the issue alive with their lawmakers to ensure the AM Radio bill becomes law by year's end.

Texans Leading Effort

Texas' Sen. Ted Cruz and more than half of the Lone Star State's delegation to the U.S. House are leading the effort to ensure all passenger vehicles in the country continue to have AM Radio.

They recognize AM Radio's role as the backbone of the nation's emergency communications system and the popularity of the "platform's" religious, sports, and diverse news/talk programming among their constituents.

About 28 percent of all Texans listen to one of the state's 275 AM Radio stations daily.
