Cape Coral Suspends Emergency Services Due to High Winds

October 9, 2024

As of 7 p.m., the City of Cape Coral's Emergency Operations Center (EOC) has suspended all emergency services across the city due to sustained wind speeds reaching 45 mph or higher. This precaution is necessary to ensure the safety of police, fire, and medical personnel, who will shelter in place until conditions are safe to resume operations.

Although emergency services are temporarily suspended, 9-1-1 calls will still be logged, and a prioritization system is in place. Emergency personnel will respond as soon as conditions allow.

"We are closely monitoring wind speeds, and emergency crews are primed for response," said Ryan Lamb, Director of Emergency Management and Resilience. "Once it is safe, our emergency responders will deploy and begin responding to all calls for assistance that came in while services were offline."

Residents are advised to stay off the roads and shelter in place until Hurricane Milton passes and City crews can safely assess the situation. Cape Coral faces the threat of dangerous storm surge from Wednesday evening through Thursday evening, with forecasts floodwaters of 7 to 10 feet above ground level in some areas.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local news channels and the City of Cape Coral's communications. Non-emergency updates are available on the City's website at www.capecoral.gov/milton or through the City's social media platforms.
