Luján Applauds New USDA Programs to Strengthen Specialty Crop Sector

Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), a member of the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, applauded the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announcement of new programs that will provide $2 billion to support U.S. specialty crop producers.

"Across New Mexico, specialty crop producers provide high-quality, nutritious produce to feed our nation and the world and support our trademark crops from pecans to chile. The Marketing Assistance for Specialty Crops and Commodity Storage Assistance programs will provide $2 billion for specialty crop producers and support the backbone of U.S. agriculture," said Luján.

"I commend Secretary Vilsack for his commitment to our specialty crop producers and for recognizing the critical role they play in supporting our communities," continued Luján. "This announcement will boost the specialty crop sector for years to come, and as a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, I remain focused on passing our next Farm Bill and delivering resources for our nation's farmers."

Earlier this week, Senator Luján praised the introduction of the Rural Prosperity and Food Security Act to support farmers, ensure food security for families, and strengthen rural communities. The legislation also strengthens support for specialty crop farmers and producers.
