Grandma Dahl's Corn Sausage Chowder: A Fall Family Favorite

Blog Post by Nicki Fisher, Programs Manager, Western Kansas Grower Services

As the fall season slowly arrives and the crisp air ushers us into the harvest season, it's the perfect time to dive into quick, comforting dishes. My grandma Dahl's Corn Sausage Chowder is my favorite meal before a football game, after a long day of harvesting, or on any chilly fall night. It's a bowl of comfort, perfect for enjoying with friends and family, and it adds a touch of warmth and coziness to any gathering.

Grandma (Mary) Dahl always has it ready on her stovetop at the right moment-whether we needed a warm bowl while trick-or-treating our country neighbors on Halloween or after sports practice on Friday nights before heading to the high school football game. Mary grew up on a dairy farm in central Pennsylvania. She later married my grandpa, Dwayne Dahl, from north central Kansas where they farmed and raised cattle. Mary has 8 grandkids aged 25 to 19, who have kept her busy with sporting events, graduations, and many other events. She also is a diehard K-State fan, although you can catch her rooting for Penn State.

So, to be as well-known as Mary Dahl for your Corn Sausage Chowder:

Start by cooking 1 pound of pork sausage with 1 cup of chopped onion in a large Dutch oven until the sausage is browned and the onion is tender. Drain the excess fat, then return it to the pot. Add 4 cups of cubed potatoes, seasoning with salt and pepper to taste, and 2 cups of water. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer until the potatoes are tender.

Next, stir in 16 ounces of cream corn, 16 ounces of sweet corn, and a 12-ounce can of evaporated milk. Reheat the soup. Serve hot and enjoy a bowl of this deliciously comforting soup.

Whether you're feeding a crowd or just looking to warm up after a long day, this soup is sure to become a hit and maybe a new family favorite!
