This week, Denver Parks & Recreation (DPR) shared exciting updates with the community on the Civic Center Next 100 Vision Plan, which will revitalize Civic Center Park as the heart of downtown Denver.
Civic Center Park serves as Denver's front door and connects the Golden Triangle, Cultural Complex, and Capitol Hill to the bustling downtown. The upcoming transformation will honor the park's history while preserving the heart of this important downtown network. This revitalization effort honors Civic Center Park as Denver's first National Historic Landmark while ensuring that it remains a dynamic and engaging space for future generations. With improved infrastructure and enhanced programming capabilities, the park will retain its historic character while integrating contemporary elements for both everyday use and special occasions.
The current design work focuses on enhancing the Greek Theater. Theatre upgrades include modern amenities to support contemporary programming for events and performances. Plans also include expanding the functionality of the Central Promenade, improving accessibility, adding serene garden rooms, and establishing a new south entry to the park.
"This project goes beyond enhancing a park; it's about creating a resilient and inclusive future for all of downtown," said DPR Executive Director Jolon Clark. "The improvements we've made in recent years are just the beginning. Through this project, Civic Center Park will emerge as the vibrant destination our city truly deserves."
Funding is currently secured for the initial improvements to the Greek Theater and Central Promenade. The City & County of Denver, alongside the Civic Center Conservancy, is actively seeking additional resources to ensure that all planned enhancements can be completed in a single construction phase.
DPR plans to host a final project unveiling and groundbreaking in 2025. Construction is anticipated to begin in Fall 2025. The Civic Center Next 100 Phase 1 Implementation project is expected to be completed with the park reopening in spring 2027.
