Minimally Invasive Kidney Stone Treatment Available at Kaleida Health; Urology Team Completes 150th Procedure

Kaleida Health is proud to announce that it is the first hospital system in Western New York to offer the new SURE (Steerable Ureteroscopic Renal Evacuation) procedure for the treatment and elimination of kidney stones. This groundbreaking technology, developed by Calyxo Inc., marks a paradigm shift in urological care.

Having recently completed its 150th case, Kaleida Health - including Buffalo General Medical Center/Gates Vascular Institute (BGMC/GVI) and Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital - stands among an elite group of the first 10 hospital systems globally to participate in the early market evaluation of this innovative procedure. The team at BGMC/GVI also currently stands as the #1 provider of the SURE procedure with the CVAC System in the country. Kaleida Health, in conjunction with UB urologists, has now treated the most patients nationally using this latest technology, showcasing its expertise in advanced urological care.

The SURE procedure is performed exclusively with the CVAC System, a first-of-its-kind kidney stone solution that combines ureteroscopy, laser lithotripsy, irrigation and vacuum aspiration into a single streamlined procedure. Prior to this, kidney stones were fragmented into pieces via laser with the hope that a patient would pass them naturally in the subsequent days and weeks. With its patented vacuum aspiration system, the new SURE procedure allows for immediate removal of these small fragments, significantly improving outcomes and reducing recovery times for patients.

"We are excited to offer the CVAC System and SURE procedure to our patients," said Kent Chevli, MD, Director of Urology at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Urology at UB's Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. "The SURE procedure allows us to ensure the complete removal of kidney stone fragments in a minimally invasive manner and marks a major advancement in treatment options that offer our patients the best experience and outcomes. The SURE procedure reduces patient pain and discomfort, emergency room visits and repeat procedures. We can visually verify a stone-free kidney during the procedure, offering patients peace of mind."

Landmark data from the ASPIRE clinical trial, unveiled at the American Urological Association's 2024 annual meeting, demonstrates that the SURE procedure surpasses the current standard of care (standard ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy) for kidney stone clearance. One year post procedure, patients treated with SURE experienced fewer visits to the emergency department, hospitalizations and the need for retreatment compared to those who underwent standard ureteroscopy.

According to the American Urological Association, approximately 10 percent of the U.S. population will encounter kidney stones at some stage in their life. The condition not only causes significant discomfort but also leads to considerable healthcare expenditures. The introduction of the SURE procedure using the CVAC System represents a significant stride toward improved kidney stone management.
