CMS report finds hospital at home program safe, effective

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Sept. 30 released a report on the hospital-at-home program, which found that patients and caregivers overall had positive experiences in the program. Patients in the H@H program were more likely to be white, urban-living and less likely to receive Medicaid or low-income subsidies. The report doesn't provide insight into the criteria participating hospitals use to identify patients suitable for H@H care, but does note that hospitals used evidence and an awareness of their own capacity to support care in the home to establish their criteria. Patients were most commonly treated for respiratory, circulatory and renal conditions, as well as infectious diseases. The study also found that H@H patients had a lower mortality rate than those in brick-and-mortar facilities but had a slightly longer length of stay.
