Rep. Cuellar Announced Over $3.6 Million for TAMIU Education Programs

Congressman Henry Cuellar, Ph.D. (TX-28) announced two Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) grants totaling over $3.6 million to Support the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) and College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP). Specifically, Dr. Cuellar secured $1,473,960 for the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program and $2,184,872 for the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP).

"Our students are the most important investment in our country. These transformative grants will ensure TAMIU students are set up for success," said Dr. Cuellar. "The SANE grant will train registered nurses to become sexual assault nurse examiners. Meanwhile, the CAMP grant will provide academic advising and career readiness resources for students. In Congress, I'll keep fighting for more educational resources so our students can get a quality education at home and be prepared to enter the workforce. I would like to thank TAMIU President Dr. Pablo Arenaz and TAMIU educators for working with me to deliver for our students."

The grants will sustain the critical Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program through funding from the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) and the College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

The SANE grant will train 54 registered nurses during a three-year project, 18 of which will be certified as a SANE for pediatric populations, an additional 18 to be certified as SANE for the adult and adolescent populations, and 18 current SANEs will renew their certification. This program is important in ensuring that nurses are properly trained to examine and assist victims of sexual assault.

The five-year CAMP grant will provide support for migrant students, including new resources to help them succeed academically and professionally such as comprehensive advising services including tutoring, mentoring, and academic advising. CAMP offers wrap-around services that address academics, career awareness, mental and physical health, and financial guidance, complemented by essential scholarships.
