D.A. Bragg Announces Guilty Plea Of Anthonia Egegbara For Unprovoked Subway Shoving In Times Square

August 8, 2024

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg, Jr. today announced the guilty plea of ANTHONIA EGEGBARA, 32, for shoving a 42-year-old woman into an oncoming train at a subway platform in Times Square in October 2021. EGEGBARA pleaded guilty in New York State Supreme Court to one count of Assault in the First Degree. Under the terms of her plea, she is expected to be sentenced on September 19, 2024 to a promised sentence of 12 years in state prison, followed by 5 years post-release supervision.

"Today Anthonia Egegbara was held accountable for pushing a stranger into an oncoming train during morning rush hour in a completely unprovoked attack," said District Attorney Bragg. "Due to this brutal conduct, the victim suffered serious physical injuries, which were thankfully non-fatal. Our transit system should be a safe environment for all Manhattanites, and we will continue prosecuting those who jeopardize the safety of its commuters, riders and workers."

According to court documents and statements made on the record in court, and as admitted in the defendant's guilty plea, on October 4, 2021, at approximately 8:06 a.m., the 42-year-old woman was waiting on the northbound 1, 2 and 3 train platform at the Times Square - 42nd Street subway station, near West 42nd Street and 7th Avenue. As a train entered the station, EGEGBARA, who was sitting on a nearby bench, stood up, walked over to the woman, and pushed her into the train.

Witnesses called 9-1-1 and the woman was transported to the hospital, where she had to stay for several days. She suffered a broken arm, which required surgery, and experienced bleeding from the leg, as well as bleeding and bruising to the face. She also received continuing medical treatment to address lingering injuries affecting her ability to lift and grip objects.

EGEGBARA fled the station and was arrested the next day.
