"It is also important to me to further all forms of diversity on campus-to include the opinions and viewpoints of students from all walks of life-by helping those needing financial aid." -Samuel E. Bain, Jr. '68

The Grossman School of Business (Grossman School) at the University of Vermont (UVM) hosts senior business leaders from around the world to engage in thought provoking conversations with students as part of its Dean's Leadership Speaker Series. This year, Grossman School is proud to welcome alumnus Samuel E. Bain, Jr. '68, Partner at Cerity Partners Boston. The event will take place on Wednesday, October 16, 2024 from noon - 1 p.m. in the Keller Room in Ifshin Hall, and is free and open to the public. Grossman School students will earn PEAKS points credentials.

An avid problem solver who enjoys developing unique solutions to complicated problems, Sam will be discussing "An (im)Perfect Path to a Profession, Entrepreneurism, and Success." His talk will delve into his forty years of experience to emphasize that there is no set path to success, but rather we will face many options that we must each choose to navigate.

A native Vermonter, Sam attended UVM and graduated with his Bachelors of Science degree in Mathematics in 1968. later earning a Master of Science degree in Systems Design and Management from George Washington University. In 1987, Sam founded Bainco International Investors, a private asset management firm that was based in Boston, Massachusetts. After a successful 33-year run, Bainco was acquired by Cerity Partners on December 31, 2020, with Bain continuing to serve in a partner role, applying his more than forty years of experience assisting individuals and families with asset management, individual investments and complex estate, tax and gift planning strategies.

A Trustee Emeritus of the University of Vermont, Sam was an exemplary chair of the Investment Sub-Committee of the UVM Board of Trustees, earning a Distinguish Service Award from the school in 2016. In 2006, Sam and Janet Gordon Bain '69 established the Bain Family Scholarship for students in the Grossman School of Business and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. and in 2022 they made further commitments of over $1 million in donations to continue the support of these scholarships and the Osher Center for Integrative Health. They have also invested in buildings around campus through donations to the renovations of the UVM Alumni house in 2012, and the Grossman School Bain Multimedia Studio.

"I wanted to provide strong support for student scholarships because, both for me and for the majority of UVM students, scholarships made it possible to participate in and capture the excellence of a UVM education," said Sam. "It is also important to me to further all forms of diversity on campus-to include the opinions and viewpoints of students from all walks of life-by helping those needing financial aid."

Sam is one of several business leaders from around the world that the Grossman School of Business welcomes as part of its annual Dean's Leadership Speaker Series to engage in thought-provoking conversations with students.
