“Impressive” war memorial stands out for second year running

The Kirkwall and St Ola War Memorial has received a plaudit from the Royal British Legion Scotland Highlands and Islands area for the second year running.

The memorial, which looks over St Magnus Cathedral's kirk green, has been named "Best Kept War Memorial" in the "Large Community without Gardens" category.

Judges described the memorial as being "a credit to you," "well maintained and clean," with "perfect inscriptions". In addition, they felt that the new pointing and seating enhanced its appearance, as did the colourful planters with RBL colours (thanks to the Wellpark Garden Centre), and has easy access.

Orkney Islands Council looks after the St Magnus Cathedral on behalf of the people of Orkney - but it is Kirkwall and St Ola Community Council which ensures the Memorial always has a welcoming array of flowers and wreaths and works with the Council and the Royal British Legion (RBL) in Kirkwall on changes and improvements such as specialist cleaning and seating.

President of the RBL Kirkwall branch, Eddy Ross, keeps a close eye on the memorial and its surroundings to make sure it's looking its best. He said: "To me it has always been a very impressive memorial and it's important to keep it looking nice."

Tom Rendall, Chair of the Kirkwall and St Ola Community Council, said: "We are delighted to have received recognition for the second year running within these special awards. It's testament to the hard work of everyone involved in ensuring the memorial is kept at its best. It's those peedie extra touches, such as the Wellpark staff using flowers of the RBL colours within the planters, that make all the difference.

"We are very proud of the memorial, and we will ensure that it is kept in this condition for many years to come."

Kirkwall East Councillor David Dawson, said: "War memorials are hugely important in honouring those who gave their lives in the cause of freedom and justice. Our local memorial serves as a link to a past that should never be forgotten and a focus of our remembrance. Its careful maintenance by a dedicated team helps keep that link strong and for this we should all be grateful."
