On 10 December 2024, as the General Assembly continued its work, the UN Member States addressed ocean affairs and the law of the sea.
Jérémie Adlerfligel, Third Secretary at the Permanent Mission of Monaco, took this opportunity to reaffirm the Principality of Monaco's ongoing commitment to preserving and protecting the seas and oceans.
Several actions undertaken by the Prince's Government during 2024 were highlighted, such as the ratification of the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (the BBNJ Agreement), last May.
The activities carried out by the Monaco Scientific Centre, the Oceanographic Institute of Monaco, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and various stakeholders in Monegasque civil society were also highlighted.
Furthermore, ahead of the third United Nations Conference to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 (UNOC3), the opportunity was taken to reiterate the Prince's Government's priorities regarding the impact of global warming, rising sea levels and the loss of the cryosphere.
There was also mention of the Blue Economy and Finance Forum being held in the Principality of Monaco in June. This event will help to assert the private sector's vital role in financing a sustainable economy.
