Annual Service Awards Dinner Honored 82 Faculty and Staff Members

Wilkes honored 82 individuals during the Annual Service Awards Dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 6. After a brief hiatus, the dinner was reintroduced last year and will continue to be an annual Wilkes tradition to honor those who have been employed by the University starting at five years, and, this year, reaching up to 45 years, in five year milestones.

Dinner began with a welcome and invocation by Provost David Ward. President Greg Cant also gave remarks and Joe Housenick, vice president of human resources, provided remarks and the presentation of awards.

"I firmly believe that people have choices, and they are choosing to stay at Wilkes," said Ward. "It's their long-term commitment that generates traditions, which are essential to the history of this institution."

Of the 82 individuals being recognized, one of them was Liz Nicholas, who is now the assistant director of transfer admissions.

"This recognition reinforces my passion for contributing to the University's mission and inspires me to continue striving for excellence while working with students and families that want to call Wilkes home," said Nicholas.

Another awardee, Michael Steele, professor of biology, was recognized for 35 years of service and remarked that the ceremony felt special.

""It was a lovely cocktail hour and wonderful dinner, followed by an interestingly personalized presentation of each awardee by Joe Housnick as the recipients posed for a picture with Dr. Cant," said Steele.

LynnMarie Shedlock, human resources manager, organizes the Annual Service Awards Dinner. Shedlock said that many people do change jobs, but to have as many longstanding employees as Wilkes does is a testament to the great atmosphere Wilkes provides.

"Not only does dedicating one's career to our students take tenacity and dedication, but it also says something about the University as well," said Shedlock. "These employees chose to stay here for their careers because it's a great place to work."

Wilkes also honors any retirees. There are 8 people who are retired or will be retiring in 2024. All honorees receive a certificate and a unique gift.

"Beyond the achievements and milestones, you are role models, mentors, trailblazers, a safe space for our students, and the very foundation of the Wilkes experience," said Cant during his remarks when addressing the attendees, colleagues and friends. "You provide more than just education-you create a place where students can dream, grow, and prepare to make their mark on the world, whatever path they choose."

Spending time as University employees truly impacts thousands of students, and the work that's done matters. Wilkes faculty and staff members work tirelessly to further the mission, vision and values of this institution. We watch, guide, assist, coach and mentor our students as they transform into graduates who are successful and impactful members of society.

"Think of the thousands of students these employees have impacted across multiple generations," said Ward. "There's something to be said about that kind of commitment."
