MAYOR TUCKER, ARTS COMMUNITY CELEBRATE GROUNDBREAKING FOR ARTS UNITED CENTER EXPANSION

August 7, 2024 - Today, Mayor Sharon Tucker joined the Arts United of Greater Fort Wayne for a groundbreaking ceremony, commencing the expansion and modernization of the Arts United Center.

"I'm excited that the enhancements to the Arts United Center means that more people will be able to enjoy the arts-whether they're creating the art or engaging in the art," said Mayor Sharon Tucker. "As Fort Wayne continues to grow, it's comforting to know that we're also expanding our arts offerings and further improving the quality of life for all in our community."

"This groundbreaking marks a milestone not only for Arts Campus Fort Wayne, Fort Wayne's state and city-recognized cultural district, but the community as a whole," said Dan Ross, President and CEO of Arts United. "The Arts United Center has been our community's theatre for five decades, and we are preserving that important history. It will continue serving future generations as it becomes fully functional and accessible."

The Arts United Center, designed by architect Louis I. Kahn, has been a staple in the community since its opening in 1973. The expansion and modernization project was initiated after an eight-year planning process that began with a comprehensive assessment of the lack of accessibility in the venue, the evolution of theatre technology needs, and the functional needs of the resident and presenting organizations, including Fort Wayne Civic Theatre, Fort Wayne Ballet, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, and Fort Wayne Youtheatre.

The Arts United Center, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, will undergo a nearly $40 million revitalization of the existing structure and the addition of a newly constructed accessible lobby for community members. The construction is anticipated to last eighteen months, with a reopening target date of Fall 2025 for resident organizations to resume events and programming in the venue.

The capital campaign for this project, A Soaring Vision, has raised funds via a private and public partnership with the community. Arts United announced the community giving phase of the capital campaign in October 2023, and today announced the Sponsor a Seat campaign.
