Denver, July 23, 2024 - Today, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold announced that the mandatory recount of Colorado's Republican primary race for House District 58 is complete. The recount confirmed that Larry Don Suckla is the winner of the race.
"The mandatory recount for House District 58 is complete and has confirmed the results of the race with just a three-vote margin," said Secretary of State Jena Griswold. "I commend the election workers in the eight counties in House District 58 for conducting this recount."
The final vote tallies as determined by the recounts can be found below:
Candidate Net Change in Votes Total Vote Count Percentage of Vote Total
Larry Don Suckla +1 6,489 50.01%
J. Mark Roeber +1 6,486 49.99%
A statutorily-mandated recount was required for the race for the Republican primary race for House District 58 due to the narrow vote margin between the winning and losing candidates. C.R.S. 1-10.5-101 states, "a recount of any election contest shall be held if the difference between the highest number of votes cast in that election contest and the next highest number of votes cast in that election contest is less than or equal to one-half of one percent of the highest vote cast in that election contest."
After canvass boards confirmed that the difference in votes cast between the winning and losing candidates fell below 0.5%, Secretary Griswold ordered a mandatory recount for the race on July 15, 2024.
Colorado's House District 58 is comprised of six complete counties, as well as parts of Delta and Montezuma County. The six complete counties are Dolores, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Montrose, Ouray, and San Miguel.
