The story of espresso begins in Italy at the turn of the 20th century. In 1901, Luigi Bezzera, an innovative factory owner, sought to solve a workplace problem - lengthy coffee breaks. Bezzera wanted a way to brew coffee quickly without compromising flavor and his solution was revolutionary. By using steam pressure to push water through finely ground coffee, he created a faster brewing method that resulted in a small, concentrated cup packed with flavor.
Although Bezzera's invention laid the groundwork for modern espresso, it was still rudimentary in form. In 1933, the introduction of the Moka pot by Alfonso Bialetti brought espresso-style coffee into Italian homes, further cementing its place in daily life.
In 1945, Achille Gaggia refined Bezzera's original concept by introducing the piston-driven espresso machine. Unlike its steam-powered predecessors, this machine used manual pressure to create a more consistent extraction, producing the iconic layer of crema - a creamy, golden foam which tops a perfect espresso shot. Gaggia's innovation set the standard for espresso as we know it today, elevating the beverage from a quick fix to an art form.
