BPD Remembers the Service and Sacrifice of Patrolman Patrick J. Carr Killed in the Line of Duty

BPD Remembers: On Tuesday, August 1, 1916, Patrolman Patrick J. Carr was killed in the line of duty when his motor vehicle malfunctioned while responding to aid an injured child at Castle Island. Patrolman Carr was ejected through the windshield vehicle, off the bridge and into the water, where he was rescued by a fellow officer. Patrolman Carr was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Born in Ireland, Patrolman Carr was 45 years old at the time of his death. Patrolman Carr left behind a wife and seven children under the age of 10.

Patrolman Carr was laid to rest at the New Cavalry Cemetery in Mattapan and his name is located on the National Law Enforcement Memorial on Panel 24, West Line 9. A Hero Sign has been placed in his memory at the former location of Shore Road and Day Boulevard in South Boston.
