AVETIS Association and UNESCO for the 'Hommage au Centenaire de Charles Aznavour'

The remarks by Director Ms. Ana Luiza Thompson Flores of the UNESCO Liaison Office

It is a great pleasure and privilege to celebrate this year at the Victoria Hall in Geneva the "Hommage au Centenaire de Charles Aznavour". As we gather to honor the centenary of his birth in 2024, we are reminded of the profound legacy of a man whose influence transcended the realms of art and diplomacy. Charles Aznavour (1924-2018) was a man of extraordinary talent and unwavering dedication, whose contributions continue to resonate across the world.

A towering presence in the world of music and film, Aznavour's artistry crossed time and borders, captivating audiences with songs that are as emotionally powerful as they are timeless. His career on screen, marked by performances in films by some of the most prominent filmmakers of his era, further solidified his reputation as a versatile and gifted artist.

Beyond his remarkable artistic achievements, Charles Aznavour was a man of profound conviction and commitment. Channeling his success into causes that were close to his heart, Aznavour remained deeply connected to his roots.

His deep sense of responsibility and compassion was evident in his mobilization of support for Armenia following the devastating earthquake in 1988. This dedication to his homeland and humanity was further reflected in his role as Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Armenia to UNESCO, a position he held with distinction from 1995 until his passing in 2018. In this capacity, Aznavour was a staunch advocate for the humanist values at the core of UNESCO's mission, championing cultural diversity and the education of young people as vital tools against prejudice.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, the UNESCO General Conference, in November 2023, included the centenary of Charles Aznavour's birth on the list of anniversaries with which UNESCO will be associated in 2024-2025. This honor, proposed jointly by Armenia and France, is a testament to the enduring impact of Aznavour's life and work-a legacy that will continue to resonate long into the future.

Thanks to the captivating stage presence of Ms. Khatia Buniatishvili, her warm, luminous tone, and dynamic interpretations, she has allowed us to relive the spirit and artistic language of the great Charles Aznavour.
