Councilmember Worden announces he will resign Sept. 24

Citing health concerns, Councilmember Dwight Worden announced he will resign from office Sept. 24.

Worden delivered the unexpected announcement during the Aug. 26 City Council meeting.

Two years remain on Worden's four-year term.

Worden has served on the council for nearly 10 years, including two terms as Mayor.

Worden served as Del Mar City Attorney from 1977 to 1983. Later, he was retained as special counsel on several matters. He retired in from practicing law in 2001.

Before joining the council, he served on numerous City committees and, as a community volunteer, drafted three successful ballot measures related to land use and beach preservation.

In his remarks, Worden saluted his City Council colleagues.

"My heart will always be with them," he said, "with our outstanding City staff, our residents, and with the City of Del Mar."

Councilmembers will have 60 days from the date of Worden's resignation to appoint a replacement or hold a special election to fill his seat for the remainder of his term.
