M 14/I 96 project update: One lane open between Levan and Beck roads for stage changes coming July 10 11

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP, Mich. - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is planning changes to the ongoing construction on both directions of the M-14/I-96 project between Sheldon and Newburgh roads. This work is weather dependent and subject to change.

Beginning 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, westbound I-96/M-14 will have one lane open from Levan Road to Beck Road for stage changes and lane striping. The westbound I-96/M-14 ramp to southbound I-275 will also be closed that day. The northbound I-275 ramp to westbound M-14 remains closed through late August.

After 8 p.m., westbound I-96/M-14 will reopen to two lanes from Levan Road to Beck Road, except under I-275, where it will have one through-lane open, plus the exit ramp lanes. This will remain in place through late August.

Beginning 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Thursday, July 11, eastbound I-96/M-14 will have one lane open from Beck Road to Levan Road for stage changes and lane striping. The Newburgh Road ramp to eastbound I-96/M-14 will be closed through late August.

After 8 p.m., eastbound I-96/M-14 will have two lanes open from Beck Road to Levan Road through late August.

Local road closures remaining in place for ongoing bridge work include:

• Schoolcraft Road over M-14 until early November.
• Robinwood Drive over M-14 until late July.
• One lane closed in each direction on Haggerty Road over M-14 until mid-August.

This three-year, $139 million investment includes rebuilding the freeway with new concrete pavement from Sheldon Road to Newburgh Road, including the ramps at the M-14/I-96/I-275 interchange. Additionally, the work will include maintenance on 17 bridges and rebuilding the I-275 Metro Trail along M-14 from Edward Hines Drive to I-275. Bridge work and shoulder widening will be happening throughout the summer, then next year eastbound M-14/I-96 will be rebuilt, followed by the westbound lanes in 2026.

Roughly 66 percent of this project's funding is made possible by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's Rebuilding Michigan program to rebuild the state highways and bridges that are critical to the state's economy and carry the most traffic. The investment strategy is aimed at fixes that result in longer useful lives and improves the condition of the state's infrastructure. The other 33 percent of the project's budget is being covered by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 1,974 jobs.
