NI Sustainability Guiding Principles

At the same time, questions are raised about the sustainability of nickel mining and production. Sustainability is not limited to nickel miners and producers. It goes beyond the gates of these companies and should take into account the impacts and benefits of nickel during use and at the end of life. However, the corporate responsibility of modern producers cannot be underestimated. Nickel can be mined and produced with minimal impact on workers, communities and the surrounding environment. Many tools and studies exist that are available to the industry to achieve high Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) standards.

Nickel Institute Members take that responsibility seriously by promoting a greater understanding of nickel and nickel compounds, their impacts and benefits throughout production, use, and at the end of life. Through their membership of the Nickel Institute they pool resources and expertise to further scientific research and development, which in turn lays the basis for peer-reviewed studies, as well as internationally recognised guidance and methodologies.

The knowledge and expertise that the Nickel Institute has accumulated over more than forty years has inspired the development of these Sustainability Guiding Principles. The principles aim to provide guidance to companies on their journey to achieve high ESG standards and inspire action throughout the sector and the value chain.

The principles described in this document are intended to emphasise nickel-specific challenges rather than provide broad guidance with respect to ESG standards.
