McMahon Foundation endows John McArthur President’s Distinguished Scholarship

The Cameron University Foundation has established the John McArthur President's Distinguished Scholarship, thanks to the generosity of The McMahon Foundation, which has provided a gift of $25,000 for the endowment. The scholarship honors John McArthur, CU's 17th president.

"On behalf of the Cameron University Foundation, I want to thank the trustees of the McMahon Foundation for their undying support of Cameron and its students," said John Veal, CU Foundation board member. "Thank you for making our seventh President's Distinguished Scholarship possible. It is fitting that this endowed scholarship focuses on the STEM disciplines, one of President McArthur's biggest initiatives."

Phil Kennedy, chair of the McMahon Foundation, acknowledged the different priorities established by Cameron's presidents, telling McArthur, "You've done a magnificent job. That's why we - the McMahon trustees - knew we had to show you how much we appreciate you and your efforts."

The scholarship will be awarded to full-time students who are pursuing baccalaureate degrees and will assist them in participating in additional academic enrichment activities such as undergraduate research, internships, study away or study abroad. Preference will be given to students pursuing majors in mathematics, computer science, physics or engineering.

The new endowment is the seventh addition to the President's Distinguished Scholarship program in which competitive, merit-based scholarships are designed to retain top student scholars at Cameron University. Scholars are chosen based on a combination of superior intellect and academic achievement; outstanding integrity; excellent written and verbal communications skills; creativity; and imagination.
