'Trailblazer Series' at Fort Mandan State Historic Site features hands-on history

WASHBURN, N.D. - The September "Trailblazer Series" at Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan State Historic Site will meet Saturdays, 1-2 p.m. at the Fort Mandan Visitor Center in Washburn. These fun programs and presentations offer hands-on learning for all ages.

Sept. 7 Blacksmithing of the 1800s, 1-2 p.m. Explore the art of blacksmithing as it was practiced in the 1800s. Learn about the tools, forge setup, and materials used by blacksmiths of the era. Visitors will safely replicate blacksmithing techniques using clay and wooden tools.

Sept. 14 Fort Building, 1-2 p.m. Discover the fascinating history of military forts and their strategic importance. Learn about their design, purpose, and role they played in shaping history. Then, get creative as you're provided with materials to construct your very own fort.

Sept. 21 Birding Scavenger Hunt, 1-2 p.m. The Lewis and Clark journals identify 134 species of birds. Learn about the species that call this area home, then set out on a scavenger hunt to spot as many as you can.

Sept. 28 Pemican Making, 1-2 p.m. Discover the rich history of pemmican and its crucial role during the fur trade, supporting explorers and traders on their journeys. Learn the traditional process of making this essential food and create your own batch to take home.

The programs are included with your daily admission fee or free with a State Historical Society Foundation Membership.

Fort Mandan State Historic Site and the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center are managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota.
