COLUMBUS, Ohio -In recognition of National Recovery Month, RecoveryOhioand the Ohio Department of Commerce'sDivisions of Liquor Controland Cannabis Controlare encouraging Ohioans who may be struggling with addiction to alcohol and controlled substances to take advantage of available resources for treatment.

Started in 1989, National Recovery Month celebrates the recovery community and the importance of evidence-based treatment and recovery practices. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 6,750 Ohioans, on average, die each year from excessive drinking. In Ohio alone, approximately 20% of adults report they binge drink, which compares to 17% in nationwide.

"As we observe National Recovery Month, it's essential to remember that recovery is achievable for everyone," said Aimee Shadwick, Director of RecoveryOhio. "By connecting individuals with the right support and resources, we can help Ohioans on their path to recovery and make our communities stronger."

The Division of Liquor Control (DOLC) offers many resources on the topic of alcohol abuse prevention and social responsibility on its website, including information to connect Ohioans with recovery resources. More information on those resources is available at com.ohio.gov/SocialResponsibility.

"As one of 17 control states in the nation, we take our role to foster social responsibility in Ohio seriously," said DOLC Superintendent Jackie DeGenova. "The Division has established important partnerships with recovery and prevention organizations and understands the importance of sharing these critical resources with Ohioans and our liquor permit holders to prevent underage drinking and excessive drinking while supporting the recovery efforts of individuals."

Following the recent launch of non-medical cannabis sales in the state last month, the Division of Cannabis Control encourages individuals who choose to use non-medical cannabis to do so with safety in mind.

"It is important for those individuals who choose to use cannabis to understand that these products can impact individuals in very different, and sometimes unpredictable ways," said Jim Canepa, Superintendent of the Division of Cannabis Control. "Any Ohioans who think they might need assistance for themselves or loved ones as it relates to cannabis use should not hesitate to take advantage of the resources that are available to them."

In addition, the Division of Securities, which is also within the Department of Commerce, developed the "Recovery Within Reach" program in 2022 to educate financial professionals and Ohioans about the cost of opioid addiction. This program offers educational resources to financial advisors as it relates to the physical and financial health and well-being of their clients since addiction can disrupt the financial and retirement plans of anyone impacted.
