Lowenstein Sandler Adds Another Former Government Lawyer: Director of New Jersey Attorney General’s Office Division of Law, Michael T.G. Long, Returns to Firm as White Collar[...]

Lowenstein Sandler is proud to announce that Michael T.G. Long, former Director of the Division of Law (DOL) within the New Jersey Attorney General's Office, will return to the firm as partner in the firm's White Collar Defense and Business Litigation practice groups effective Friday, December 13, 2024.

Long was appointed by New Jersey Attorney General and Lowenstein alumnus Matthew J. Platkin in May 2022 to lead the Division of Law (DOL). DOL serves as primary legal counsel for New Jersey state government by providing legal advice to the state's departments and agencies, defending the state in civil litigation, and bringing civil lawsuits against individuals, corporations, and other entities that violate the law and harm New Jersey and its residents. DOL's responsibilities cover a broad range of legal issues, including those involving banking, child protection, corrections, education, environmental, finance, health, insurance, taxation, and transportation matters. As its Director, Long led over 500 attorneys in providing legal advice and counseling to all of the state's executive branch agencies.

Long has extensive experience handling white collar matters, internal investigations, complex commercial litigation, and state and federal appeals. Deeply committed to serving the community, Long has consistently made pro bono initiatives a priority in his practice, including representing victims of domestic violence, advocating for prison and parole reform, and advancing environmental causes.

Christopher Porrino, Chair of Lowenstein's Litigation Department, former New Jersey Attorney General, and former Chief Counsel to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who also served as Director of the Division of Law from 2012 to 2014, says: "I am proud that Mike is returning to our firm after his distinguished public service. He joined the ranks of numerous Lowenstein attorneys who periodically step aside from private practice to serve our communities, and then return-bringing with them the invaluable insights that working in government provides. "

"I am excited to rejoin my Lowenstein family," says Long. "I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to lead a team of incredible public servants at the Division of Law and the Attorney General's Office, and I am looking forward to applying the experience I gained to now serve the needs of the firm's clients all over the country."

A former judicial law clerk to the Hon. James R. Zazzali of the Supreme Court of New Jersey, Long earned his J.D. summa cum laude from Seton Hall University School of Law, and his B.A from Boston College.

Long's return highlights the firm's ongoing success in attracting prominent, accomplished former public servants, prosecutors, and trial lawyers whose experience enhances the team's depth and breadth. In addition to Porrino, Lowenstein litigators with records of government service include Justice Barry T. Albin (ret.) (former Associate Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, Deputy Attorney General in the Appellate Section of the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice, and Assistant Prosecutor in Passaic and Middlesex counties); Kent Anderson (former Deputy Attorney General at the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General); Matthew Boxer (former New Jersey State Comptroller and Director of New Jersey's Authorities Unit); Jason S. Gould (former Chief, Health Care Fraud Unit, U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey); Parimal Garg (former Chief Counsel to New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy); Michael B. Himmel (former Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of New Jersey); Rachel Maimin (former Assistant U.S. Attorney, Southern District of New York); Scott B. McBride (former Assistant U.S. Attorney, District of New Jersey; former Deputy Chief, Economic Crimes Unit; former member, Health Care & Government Fraud Unit); Kathleen A. McGee (former Bureau Chief of the Bureau of Internet and Technology, New York State Attorney General's Office); Alexander Shalom (former Assistant Deputy Public Defender in Essex County; former Capital Cases Clerk for the Chief Justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court); Peter Slocum (former First Assistant Attorney General of New Jersey and former Assistant Counsel to the Governor); and Judge Freda L. Wolfson (ret.) (former Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey).
