Weather Camera Installed Atop Hemmens Cultural Center

Elgin has welcomed a new addition: WGN's latest weather camera, now operational atop The Hemmens Cultural Center.

Each year, WGN installs WeatherBug cameras across the region to create a comprehensive weather monitoring network. Other locations include Woodstock, DeKalb, Ottawa, Joliet, Aurora, Saint Charles, Waukegan, Rosemont, Chicago, Kankakee, and Gary, Indiana. The addition of Elgin is a significant enhancement to the WGN network.

While tools like radar and satellites effectively monitor weather, the camera provides "ground truth"-real-time visual confirmation of conditions. For instance, while radar can detect snow in Elgin, it cannot confirm how much snow has accumulated or the visibility impacts. The live camera addresses this gap, improving forecasts with localized insights.
