Planning Commission advances short term rental regulations

The Planning Commission on Aug. 13 unanimously recommended that the City Council approve proposed regulations for short term rentals.

Commissioners also recommended that a draft ordinance define short term rentals as rental of a dwelling unit for less than one month, pointing to a similar definition adopted by the City of San Diego, which defines a month as "… a period of consecutive days from the first calendar day of occupancy in any month to the same calendar day in the next month following or the last day of the next month following if no corresponding calendar day exists."

Del Mar's yearlong process to set policy for short term rentals has included multiple meetings and detailed analyses by staff, counsel and a consultant.

As proposed, the short term rental regulations would be enacted through amendments to the Del Mar Municipal Code and Local Coastal Program.

Introduction of an ordinance to the City Council is scheduled for Sept. 23.
