Repainting of Maibaum Underway

Fredericksburg, Texas -The City of Fredericksburg and the Pedernales Creative Arts Alliance (PCAA) started work this week on the repainting of the Maibaum at Marktplatz.

The City's Electric Department and Parks Department assisted with the removal of the arms on Tuesday, July 16. Those departments will reinstall the arms, after painting has occurred. The PCAA is donating all costs for the arms and pole to be repainted. The arms will be repainted by local artist Ruby Lee Clark and the pole is being repainted by Robin and Jason Barnes.

The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of September.

The Maibaum at Marktplatz has a unique set of decorations that illustrates the history, culture, and customs of Fredericksburg. The decorative pole stands on the northeast portion of Marktplatz between the Adelsverein Halle and the Oktoberfest Halle.

It features eight tiers - each tier significant to this community, from the peace negotiations between the Native Americans and the German pioneers (bottom level) to the importance of agriculture (specifically grapes, peaches and cattle) and the ships that carried the early settlers from Germany.

The PCAA paid for the Maibaum when it was initially installed in 1991, while it was last repainted over 10 years ago.

The City would like to thank the PCAA for the support on this project.
