Rep. Panetta Secures Federal Funding to Modernize Monterey Airport

Monterey, CA - United States Representative Jimmy Panetta (CA-19)announced more than $37 million in new federal funding to modernize the Monterey Airport. The federal grants, awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Airport Improvement Program, will support the modernization of the Monterey Airport including funding for new terminal work, runway and tarmac improvements, and new aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment. This year, the Airport Improvement Program has invested more than $1.1 billion in airport infrastructure projects around the country to improve runways, taxiways, signage, lighting, and markings.

Specifically, the airport is receiving four grants totaling $37,306,785:

  • $2,815,801 for runway improvements
  • $16,788,053 for "apron" tarmac improvements
  • $958,274 for aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment
  • $16,744,657 for landside terminal improvements

"This significant federal investment in the Monterey Regional Airport will enhance the safety, security, and passenger experience for travelers all across our 19th Congressional District," said Rep. Panetta. "As always, I'm proud that the federal government continues to play its part by ensuring that the power of its purse is felt right here by helping our local airport improve its terminal, runways, and services. This type of federal investment in the Monterey Regional Airport will benefit our community members with better travel options and bolster our local economy as people continue to come here to experience the beauty and bounty of our Central Coast."

"The Airport continues to be grateful for the assistance of Congressman Panetta in our effort to make Monterey Regional Airport as safe as it can be and to prepare the airport for a bright future ahead. These funds will be used to complete the new apron and auto parking lot to support the replacement terminal. Funds are also available to address a runway repair and purchase a new aircraft rescue and firefighting truck to replace our current 18-year-old vehicle," said Michael LaPierre, Monterey Regional Airport Executive Director.
