Dr. George Agyekum Donkor Advocates Enforcement of Existing Legislation in Fight Against Corruption at the Crans Montana Forum

04/07/2024

The President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID), Dr George Agyekum Donkor, who was invited as the Guest of Honour at the 36th Annual Session of the Crans Montana Forum, held in Brussels, Belgium, has advocated the enforcement of existing legislation in various countries in the fight against corruption.

In a speech delivered on June 27, 2024, Dr Donkor underscored that corruption is pervasive in all parts of the world and emphasised a collaborative effort in dealing with this canker. Dr Donkor stated, "Politically, corruption distorts democratic processes, enabling those with deep pockets to influence elections and policymaking, often to the detriment of the public good".

He opined that in Africa, the challenge is not the lack of anti-corruption laws but the weak enforcement of existing legislations, underscoring that this failure to hold corrupt individuals accountable fosters a culture of impunity, encouraging further corrupt practices and eroding confidence in public institutions.

Given the severe impact of economic crimes, corruption, and illicit financial flows on governance and societal well-being, Dr Donkor called for the rigorous enforcement of anti-corruption laws and the pursuit of proactive measures to prevent corrupt activities. He concluded by saying, "It is important that we win this war against corruption and economic crimes not just for ourselves, but for our children, grandchildren and generations yet unborn".

The Crans Montana Forum brought together a diverse audience of renowned diplomats, Heads of State, high-level government officials, investors and academics, for deliberations centred on the theme "Facing multiple crises - the world in search of its future".

The Crans Montana Forum is a global platform which aims to highlight current global challenges and proffer workable options for recovery.
