EPA Proposes Cleanup Plan for Cedar Creek Superfund Site in Cedarburg, Wisconsin

EPA to hold a public meeting on August 29, and will accept public comments on the plan until September 12

CHICAGO (August 16, 2024) - U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources are proposing a cleanup plan to address PCB-contaminated soil and sediment for Cedar Creek Operable Unit 2B at the Cedar Creek Superfund alternative site in Cedarburg, Wisconsin. The proposed plan will be available for public comment until September 12.

EPA's preferred proposed cleanup plan includes:

• Removing PCB-contaminated material in floodplain soil and in-water sediment deposits.

• Backfilling and restoring excavated areas.

• Installing a 6-inch residual sand cover following removal of in-water sediment deposits.

• Implementing a long-term monitoring program to track decreasing PCB concentrations in fish tissue.

This proposed plan also includes a no-action alternative since a cleanup was completed in 2018 that met all cleanup objectives.

On Thursday, August 29, EPA will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. at Cedarburg City Hall, W63 N645 Washington Ave. The agency will give a presentation about the cleanup plan, followed by a question-and-answer period. EPA will also accept formal comments from the public.

Residents can also submit comments online at EPA's Cedar Creek website or submit comments by mail, addressed to EPA's community involvement coordinator, Ruth Muhtsun at 77 W Jackson Street RE-19J, Chicago, IL 60604. Comments must be received before or postmarked by September 12.
