Mayor Malik Provides Update on Air Quality Monitoring near Rosemary Blvd.

Water quality samples continue to be taken daily

Akron, Ohio, Sept. 13, 2024 - Today, the City of Akron is releasing a summary of the air quality monitoring data from the fire incident site at 1081 Rosemary Blvd. The air has been constantly monitored since the fire occurred on Thursday, Sept. 5. No unsafe levels of airborne contaminants have been detected throughout the duration of the testing. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Summit County Public Health (SCPH) and the City of Akron have agreed to the discontinuation of air quality monitoring due to these findings. During the initial incident, fire suppression materials ran off into a creek adjacent to the site. The creek runs into Long Lake (3 miles away), which is not a drinking water source. Water quality samples continue to be taken daily, and we expect preliminary lab analysis on those samples to come back sometime next week.

"We are happy to report that repeated and continuous testing of our air quality has shown no unsafe levels of contaminants in our community throughout the duration of the testing," said Mayor Malik. "The safety of our residents, our employees, and all who visit Akron will always be the most important priority for my administration. I want to again thank everyone involved in responding to the incident and monitoring in the days since."
