Stony Brook University recently received the 2024 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education.
As a recipient of the annual HEED Award - a national honor recognizing U.S. colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion - Stony Brook University will be featured, along with 113 other recipients, in the November/December 2024 issue of Insight Into Diversity magazine.
"Stony Brook's recognition with the prestigious HEED Award is a testament to our unwavering commitment to inclusivity and excellence," said Judi Brown Clarke, vice president for equity & inclusion and chief diversity officer. "This achievement reflects a year filled with remarkable strides in diversity, innovation, and community engagement, showcasing the strength of our diverse voices and the transformative impact of our collective efforts. Together, we are not just building a university; we are shaping a brighter future for all."
Insight Into Diversity magazine selected Stony Brook University for its efforts in diversity and inclusion. In 2020, USA Today ranked Stony Brook #9 in the country for campus diversity, and US News & World Report regularly ranks Stony Brook among the top national universities for diversity and social mobility. Other accolades include that Stony Brook University Hospital is among the first eight hospitals in the United States to attain the Health Care Equity Certification from The Joint Commission. Further, in the last ten years, Stony Brook University has increased its four-year graduation rate by 17 percentage points, all while maintaining equity gaps and enhancing both time-to-degree and graduation rates for graduate students.
"The HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees - and best practices for both - leadership support for diversity, campus culture and climate, supplier diversity, and many other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion," said Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of Insight Into Diversity magazine. "We take a detailed approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being done every day across their campus."
