Redefining connectivity: A new era for our customers, powered by 5G S..

With the arrival of two new best-in-class networks, 5G Standalone and WiFi 7, today marks a new era for BT Group, our networks, and most importantly our EE and BT customers.

From day one, this means enhanced mobile and broadband performance, inside and outside of the home, through better speeds, increased capacity, and lower latency. And longer-term, it's also an important milestone in our ambition to deliver a seamless and fully converged connectivity experience, where our mobile, fixed and public WiFI networks work together to give you the best and most reliable performance no matter where you are and what you're doing.

But before we delve into that, let's first focus on some of the brilliant benefits that these technologies bring in the here and now, starting with WiFi 7.

WiFi 7

Our newly launched Smart Hub Pro and Smart WiFi Pro enable EE Home Broadband customers to be amongst the first in the world to be offered a next-gen WiFi 7 router. Offering much broader capacity, the ability for data to be sent over multiple bands simultaneously, and a substantial increase in peak data transmission performance, WiFi 7 - when used together with the Smart Hub Pro and Smart WiFi Pro, gives EE customers access to ultra-reliable multi-gigabit Wi-Fi throughout the home.

That means faster speeds, less interference, more capacity and the performance to support a host of high-bandwidth activities at the same time - be that cloud gaming, immersive AR/VR, or 4K/8K video streaming.

With the average home expected to double the number of WiFi connected devices in the next five years, Smart Hub Pro and Smart WiFi Pro enable customers to truly benefit from the game-changing speeds and reliability of WiFi 7.

5G Standalone

5G Standalone is the next evolution of our mobile network, essential to unlocking the true potential of 5G by untethering it from the underlying 4G network. A network that's both built on and ready for AI, it's all about bringing greater network performance and reliability to our customers, as well as unlocking a new wave of capabilities for both businesses and consumers.

We always said that we wanted to be best when launching 5G Standalone, rather than first. That's why we've launched in 15 cities across the UK - including Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and London - and crucially have focused on ensuring uninterrupted 5G Standalone connectivity, launching with at least 95 per cent coverage in each of these cities.

This is of course just a starting point, and we'll continue to bring 5G Standalone to more and more of the UK population over the coming months. It's not just about the short-term evolution though, 5G Standalone also enables us to offer new services to our customers. Take network slicing as an example, a configuration which gives us the ability to prioritise performance even at the busiest times - perfect for mobile gaming, streaming or video conferencing on the move.

For businesses this is especially exciting. It's easy to imagine a multitude of different scenarios where being able to count on this quality of service will have a major impact. It could be food or merchandise vendors at a packed stadium, able to run their mobile payments systems from a network slice - keeping their queues moving and their customers happy. While at the very same event, another slice is supporting broadcasters to ensure high quality live-feeds can be delivered to production facilities in real-time.

The future of connectivity

All that goes to say that with 5G Standalone and Wi-Fi 7, our customers will benefit from the latest and best connectivity, both in and out of the home. But our vision doesn't stop there - as we mentioned before, 5G Standalone and WiFi 7 are also the foundational pieces of an exciting networks ambition…

Both our mobile and fixed networks are built on a converged cloud core which enables the flexibility and scalability that we need to meet the evolving connectivity requirements of our customers. This was a massive project, and essential to us being where we are today in launching two fantastic new networks.

Now we want to bring that same level of convergence to our customers. A few weeks ago we took a first step towards this with EE One, providing simplicity and control to consumers in the pricing of our networks. Now it's about bringing those networks together physically. What that means is a highly intelligent network of networks, with seamless transition between cellular and Wi-Fi. A network that's as versatile as the things you use it for, and adapts to your life in the background.

So you'll benefit from uninterrupted, reliable and high-speed connectivity as you go about your day - switching between our networks without even noticing. And this is what we mean when we talk about redefining connectivity. Right now, when your connectivity is bad, that's when you notice it - a call drops or you lose connection to an online gaming session, simply because you've moved from one location to another and with it have switched networks. Our ambition is to remove those siloes - creating networks which complement rather than contradict one another - and ultimately delivering the best and most reliable connectivity experience possible.
